Kawasaki Z650RS 50th Anniversary


Friday 11 February 2022. Bought one.
When Kawasaki introduced the Z650RS I liked it immediate, especially the green one. A test ride on the Z650 naked confirmed that the little engine was very nice and that riding a lowish power, light, bike was fun. When Kawasaki showed the 50th Anniversary version I couldn't help myself and knew I had to possess one of those tributes to days long gone.
So today I bought one. Delivery somewhere in May. Dealers have the greatest problems to get new bikes because of production or delivery problems so I'm glad it will eventually arrive.
Because the suspension on cheapish bikes are often cheapish too I have it replaced by Hyperpro springs front and a complete new Hyperpro shock rear.

Friday 25 March 2022. Surprise!
And out of the blue the ZRS appeared in the showroom. Nice surprise by Kawasaki. Next week I can pick it up.

Saturday 2 April 2022, 15km. First ride
Got the Kawi today and made a little test ride. I like it because of the very relaxed ride it offers. A moped to use for short trips, just to enjoy the ride and surroundings.

For this special occasion I got the 'Z Chronicles' book.

Friday 8 April 2022, 15km. Suspension
My dealer called today. Hyperpro doesn't have the correct springs for the RS yet, they're going to measure them on another RS from my dealer and make a set for me. I can wait since the weather turned sour again anyway.

Saturday 7 May 2022, 225km. Breaking in
The dealer has the Hyperpro stuff and is going to change the suspension at the first servicing.
Made a little trip today. The bike is very nice. I'm a fan of clutches with cables because of the direct feel you have. Kawasaki has spoiled this by installing an assisted clutch, the feel is gone and I don't like it. No big problem though.
I could measure the fuel consumption for the first time and with 1 liter for every 22 kilometers it's quite fuel economic.

Saturday 28 May 2022, 480km. 50th Anniversary celebration
Today I went to a Kawasaki dealer nearby who had organized a three day 50 years 'Z' celebration. Of course I had to attend. Overthere I was at that moment the only one with an anniversary model. I parked the RS next to its predecessor.

There were a lot of old Kawasaki's, like the Z1300 club who came with, I guess, almost 20 six cilinders.

After a while I left and took the long way home, enjoying this little moped.

Thursday 2 June 2022, 500km. Beeline
What I was missing on the Z650 was a navigation system to do some mindless touring. I didn't want a big full fledged system, a small, simple one would suffice. Enter the Beeline, simpler and smaller is impossible.
Today I gave it a go and I like it. Just enough information to show the right way and not intrusive at all. Soon I will try a longer trip with it.

Friday 3 June 2022, 615km. Beeline test
Created a route with MyRouteApp and uploaded it to the Beeline phone app.
All went pretty well until a road on the route was closed. In that case you have to find the new starting point yourself, Beeline won't recalculate an external route (I think). I could find the route again after the closed road and followed it again. Until it lead me to a another closed road. I decided to stop this route and create a new one home with the Beeline app. To find another closed road. I thought the app would recalculate the route but it didn't(?). Anyhow, I've had enough bike-time and made yet another route. This one home in compass mode, so the only thing the gadget does is pointing home and indicate distance left. Fun too.
All in all I'm quite pleased with the Beeline. It's a nice little navigation thingy. Not perfect, but neither am I ;)

Sunday 10 July 2022, 875km. Beeline test 2
Used the Beeline today again and the device recalculated the route just fine when I missed some instructions (on purpose).
The 1.000km is closing in and then finally I will have the springs replaced. Don't like the stock suspension at all.

Sunday 17 July 2022, 1000km. Broken in
Finally crossed the 1.000km mark. Time for a first service. And replace the (for me) too soft suspension by Hyperpros.

Wednesday 27 July 2022, 1040km. Suspension upgrade
Got the first service done and got the Hyperpro front and rear springs. I thought they would replace the complete rear shock... Well, it's fine like this, saves me some money. Supsension is much better now. Still comfortable but way better than stock.

Sunday 25 September 2022, 1217km. Last ride?
Took the moped for a little ride today. Probably the last one this year. Autumn is coming. After the Beast, which I rode just before the Kawi, the Kawi felt very comfortable. Enough power, good brakes, fine handling. It's a perfect companion for the KTM.

Saturday 29 October 2022, 1226km. Winterstop
Although the bike was hardly dirty after so few kilometers I still cleaned it to put it away for winter. Removed the battery and put it under a cover. Winter can come.
